This is an OOB modification for Danube Front 85 v.1.01.covering the forces deployed in the LandJut corps, covering the northernmost sector in NATOs forward defence. It is the purpose of this OOB Modification to give some suggested changes to the makeup of the danish troop contingent of this Corps in the year 1985.The ZIP file consists of this text document, a folder with pictures of the relevant units plus the .oob file itself. Three files in all. It should be possible to copy/paste the relevant parts of my LandJut OOB into the DF 85 game should you so wish. The OOB presented here gives as close an approximation to what the danish contingent of LandJut would have looked like given the confines of the game. This is NOT an official expansion or patch to the game and I suggest you clear it with your oppenent before using this file in a PBEM game. As of today (July 2009) this file has been playtested several times as part of a scenario or campaign for Danube Front 85. It still represents a work in progress that might see amendments depending on what will actually work in a given scenario or campaign.

The artwork used in the "Units folder" represents both artwork from the original game and modifications made by "Volcanoman" and "Michal"

The text below is a series of forum posts originally made on the "Blitzkrieg Wargaming Club" site, explaining the reasoning behind the design of the OOB and the nomenclature and abbreviations used.

Have fun

The Jutland Division was the danish armed forces prime contribution to the common defence of the inner german border. In 1985 it consisted of three armoured infantry brigades (all equipped alike) plus divisional troops. The manning was a mix of enlisted men on running contracts and conscripts with 9 months of service behind them. The tank strenght of the division consisted of 120 modern Leo 1A3 tanks bought in the mid-late 70s plus 18 older M41 Walker Bulldogs in the divisional recon battalion (acquired in the early 60s, last major refit in 1970-71). The infantry was mostly equipped with shorter range AT weapons (84mm Carl Gustav RRs and 66mm LAW) and the german G3/MG3 combo for small arms with .50 MGs and 81 and 120mm mortars for heavy weapons. About 2/3rds of the infantry strenght of the division was carried in M113 APCs with the remainder truckborne. The weapons mix of the infantry was the same regardless of whether the unit was motorized or mechanized (motorized units just deployed their .50 MGs and 81mm mortars on tripods instead and had fewer .50 machineguns, but more 81mm mortars). LOng range AT weapons was concentrated in a Brigade AT Company in each brigade (12 M150 and 12 TOW mounted on jeeps for a total of 24 systems pr. brigade, later enlarged to 28 systems and spread among the brigades constituent battalions). The divisional artillery consisted of 1950s vintage towed pieces (155mm M114, 203mm M115) and unupgraded M109 SPGs (with the "short" M114 barrel). Airdefence consisted of a single battalion comprised of a single 40mm BOFORS semi-radar guided AAG battery and 3 batteries of REDEYE MANPADS (distributed 1 pr. brigade). The division was dependent on mobilization and drawing of equipment (could be accomplished in about than 24 hours) before it could begin to depart its danish garrisons for its wartime position as the northernmost of LandJuts two divisions covering the area just south of Lbeck and north towards the coast. Mobilizing, moving the division to Germany, digging in, laying minefields, clearing fields of fire and coordinating with the german authorities would probabaly realistically have taken about a week or so to accomplish under peacetime conditions.

The danes also tried to help the problem by raising the so called "Jutland Battle group" (Jyske Kampgruppe). This was a weak infantry brigade consisting of 3 motorized infantry battalions (same equipment mix as the motorized infantry in the Jutland Division), a 105mm artillery battalion (with guns of 1950s vintage) and a single company of obsolete Centurion "Tank Destroyers" amred with 20. PDR guns.

-The Corps HQ is called "Schleswig Holstein" in the game and is based in Kiel. I propose renaming it to LandJut. and basing it in Rendsburg (which is where its constituting elements were garrisoned). It was a mobile HQ so unless WAPA manages to bomb it into slag it should be able to move way at some point.Corps HQ was almost fully staffed in peacetime with officers from various NATO countries and should be rated at "B"

-The parts of the Royal Danish Airforce present in the game (Flyvertaktisk Kommando) has been moved from the OPCON of the Jutland Division to LandJUt. This should enable other units that are part of the LandJut Corps to use the planes without any penalty.

The danish part of the LandJut Corps troops consisted of:

-"33. Artilleriafdeling/Nrrejyske Artilleriregiment (NJAR)" (33rd Artillery Battalion/North Jutland Artillery Regiment). A mobilization Corps artillery battalion consisting of 3 batteries of 8 1950s vintage ex-US M59 155mm "Long Tom" long range guns (24 guns in all). (I think some of the arab countries in ME 67 uses this weapon so the stats should be there). Manned by a small cadre of contract personnel in peacetime. Fleshed out on mobilization with recently released conscripts with 9 months of service behind them. Should thus be classed as "D". Should also be classed "Unreliable". Not WMD or FASCAM capable.

-"5. Ingenirbataljon/Jyske Ingenir Regiment (JIR)" (5th Engineer Battalion/The Jutland Engineer Regiment). A mobilization Corps unit consisting of 3 engineer companies w. 125 men each (so 375 men total). Also has some other companies, but they are administrative and supply units where the equipment and engineering ammunition resides. Should be both minelay/remove and bridging capable. Unit is motorized in trucks. Manned by a small cadre of contract personnel in peacetime. Fleshed out on mobilization with recently released conscripts with 9 months of service behind them and reserve officers and NCOs. Should thus be classed as "D". The stats for this unit can be taken from the danish Engineer Battalion already present in DF 85, since they look spot on to me (the engineer units were not fighting units. They had no LMGs and no AT weapons bigger than 66mm LAWs apart from a handfull of Carl Gustavs in the battalions "Security Squads". Plenty of .50 caliber machineguns though...)

-LandJut has also gotten a single 25 man A quality, Deception capable, Heliborne danish SF unit (Jgerkorpset) in OPCON.

-There was also a "Trnbataljon" (logistics battalion) from Jyske Trnregiment (JTR) (Jutland Logistics Regiment) attached, although its specific battalion number eludes me at the moment. Manned by a small cadre of contract personnel in peacetime. Fleshed out on mobilization with recently released conscripts with 9 months of service behind them and reserve officers and NCOs. Should thus be classed as "D". Whether or not to represent it with a 50 vehicle "Supply counter" is up to you.

The Jutland Division:

"Divisional HQ Unit". Not fully staffed in peacetime and reliant upon influx of reserve persoannel in order to function. Suffered under the fact that it couldnt exercise regularly with more than a brigade at a time at best (apart from sand table exercises and wargames), leading to doubts about how it would actually have gone down if there had ever been a need to control the full division in the field "for real". Should thus be rated as "D",

-"V. Opklaringsbataljon/Jydske Dragonregiment" (JDR) (Vth Reconnaisance Battalion/Jutland Dragoon Regiment). Statwise it looks allright in the game (since its 10 "vehicles" pr. Squadron represents an amalgamation and approximation of the units aggregated combat power). The individual units should be named 1/V/JDR instead of "A/5 Recce" etc., but that is a quibble (Tank, Recon and Infantry units use latin numerals when numbering battalions. Artillery, engineers and logistics dont. Fascinating eh? ;-)). Unit was manned by a 50/50 mix of enlisted men on running contracts and 9 month conscripts recently trained and recalled upon mobilization. It should thus be classed as "C".

-"3. Ingenirbataljon/Jyske Ingenir Regiment (JIR)" (3rd Engineer Battalion/The Jutland Engineer Regiment). The divisional engineer battalion. I extend the same comments here as for the 5th ENGBTN above.

-"3. Trnbataljon/Jyske Trnregiment" (JIR) (3rd Logistics Battalion/Jutland Logistics Regiment). I extend the same commets as for the LandJut Logistics battalion above to this unit.

-There was also a LRRP company attached directly to the division; "Patruljekompagniet/Jyske Division" (PTRKMP/JDIV), but since their tasks were to stay behind and report I dont think they warrant inclusion as a "Deception" capable unit. They were not meant for disruption of supply lines and rear area raids.

The Divisional Artillery of the Jutland Division:

-"24. Artilleriafdeling/Snderjyske Artilleriregiment" (SJAR) (24th Artillery Battalion/South Jutland Artillery Regiment). A Battalion of 24 1950s vintage ex-US 155mm M114 guns organized in 3 batteries of 8 howitzers each. Manned by a small cade in peacetime and by recently trained 9 month conscripts and reserve officers and NCOs upon mobilization. Thus it should be rated as "D". Not WMD capable. Should be classed as "Unreliable". Stats for this weapon can be found in the Israeli OOB for the 1967 in ME67 (no DPICM bought untill the late 1980s to complement the newly upgraded M114/39s and M109a3s).

-"18. og 19. Tunge Haubits Batteri/Nrrejyske Artilleriregiment" (NJAR) (18th and 19th Heavy Howitzer Battery/North Jutland Artillery Regiment). Two independent batteries of 4 M115 203mm Ex-US towed Howitzers of 1950s vintage. Should be amalgamated into a single 8 gun unit for management purposes (dont want too many small units crowding the picture, do we?). WMD capable (that was the entire reason behind keeping these clunkers around...). Should be classed as "Unreliable". Manned by a small cade in peacetime and by recently trained 9 month conscripts and reserve officers and NCOs upon mobilization. Thus it should be rated as "D".

-"14. Luftvrnsafdeling/Snderjyske Artilleriregiment (SJAR) (14th Anti-Air Battalion/South Jutland Artillery Regiment). Consisted of 3 "Let Luftvrnsraketbatteri" (LLVRBT) (Light Anti-Air Rocket Battery) of 12 REDEYE lauchers each. A battery was attached to each brigade and these weapons are thus included in the intrinsic AA value of these units. Also had a 4th battery consisting of 12 40mm BOFORS L/60 semi-radar guided guns of 1950s vintage plus a close in AA platoon of 4 towed M55 .50 Quad AAMGs. As for the stats for this unit they will have to be worked out based on the above. Unit should also be classed as "Unreliable". Manned by a small cade in peacetime and by recently trained 9 month conscripts and reserve officers and NCOs upon mobilization. Thus it should be rated as "D" (The REDEYE Batteries were manned by enlisted men on running contracts though). Meant to guard rear area and divisional HQ while the REDEYEs were up front with the brigades. If this unit is too small to warrant inclusion in the game its effects might be represented by jacking up the intrinsic AA of the divisional artillery and divisional HQ by 1-2 points each and enlarging their AA radius to 1 Hex.

The Armoured Infantry Brigades of the Division:

-The Brigade HQ Unit: Only partially manned in peacetime. Was to be fleshed out with reserve officers and personnel upon mobilization. Suffered under the fact that it was often hard to train the brigade staff in managing all of their constituent battalions except on the largest of exercises, and the fact, that said battalions were only partially manned in peacetime. Should probably be classed as "D" due to this.

-"Panserbataljonen" (The Armoured Battalion): A "square" battalion with 4 fighting companies (and a HQ company not represented in the game). The 1st and 2nd Company consisted of two Tank Squadrons of 10 Leopard 1A3 tanks each. These units were manned by enlisted men on running contracts. Due to a failure to reach recruitment goals these units still needed to be fleshed out with enlisted men on reserve contracts upon mobilization. Should probably be rated as "C" due to this. The 3rd company was an armoured infantry company in M113s. 138 men (represents trench strenght and people manning heavy weapons). Again, the goal was for this unit to be manned entirely with enlisted men on contracts, but due to the above mentioned failure to reach recruitment goals, most of these companies were instead manned with 9 month conscripts. Could thus be be classed as either "C" or "D" as a result. The 4th Company was a motorized Infantry Company consisting of 9 month conscripts recently recalled to service. Should be classed as "D". 138 men (represents trench strenght and people manning heavy weapons).

-"De Pansrede Infanteribataljoner" (The Armoured Infantry Battalions): Another "square" battalion. The 1st and 2nd companies consisted of 2 armoured infantry companies in M113s. These units were supposed to be manned entirely with enlisted personnel on running contracts but due to failure to reach recruitment goals most of these units would have been reliant on former enlisted personnel on reserve contracts in order to be fleshed out upon mobilization. 138 men each (represents trench strenght and people manning heavy weapons). Should thus be classed as "C". The 3rd company was a Squadron of 10 Leopard 1A3 Tanks manned by enlisted personnel on running contracts. Due to recruitment problems these units were also reliant on reserve personnel to flesh them out in case of war. This problem was even more marked here, since most of the effort went into filling up the Tank squadrons in the Armored Battalion first, these units were even more reliant upon reserve personnel. Could thus be either "C" or "D". The 4th company was a Motorized Infantry company manned by recently trained 9 month conscripts. 138 men (represents trench strenght and people manning heavy weapons). Should thus be classed as "D".

-"Brigadeartilleriafdelingen" (The Brigade Artillery Battalion): Consisted of 2 batteries of 6 M109 each (the unupgraded version with the "short" M114 gun) manned by enlisted men on running contracts. Due to recruitment problems these units needed rounding out with reserve enlisted men upon mobilization. Should thus be classed as "C"s. WMD capable. The 3rd battery consisted of 8 towed M114 ex-US 1950s vintage Howitzers manned by 9 month conscripts. Should be "Unreliable". Not WMD Capable.

-"Brigadeingenirkompagni" (Brigade Engineer Company). An engineer company in M113 APCs. Could build bridges, but only of a size appropriate for crossing minor streams and rivers like those marked "light blue" on the map. Should thus just be "minelay/clear" capable. About 125 men if only "trench strenght" is counted.

-"Trnbataljon" (Logistics Battalion). The same comment as pr. the divisional and corps LOG units above.

-"Panservrnskompagni" (PVKMP) (Anti-Tank Company). Consisted of 12 M113 APCs with external TOW mounts (3 platoons of 4 vehicles each) manned mostly by enlisted personnel on running contracts. Due to recruitment problems these units would likely still need fleshing out with reserve enlisted personnel upon mobilization. Should thus be classed as "C". No TIS. Also had 12 Jeeps/Landrovers (3 platoons of 4 each) with TOW predominantly manned by 9 month conscripts. Should thus be classed as "D". No TIS either.

-Since the danish M113 equipped units have very high Hard Attack values (18) in the stock DF85 game, the above AT Company might also simply be left out and these high AT values retained (since this would represent the TOW platoons being divided out amongst the M113 equipped companies with 1 TOW platoon going to each of the 5 M113 companies in the brigade). The remaining TOW launchers can then be consolidated into a single counter. Again it is a design decision. Do what you think best. "EDIT": Apparently the AT Companies were abolished in the early 80s (between 1980 and 1983 depending on unit and placing within the forcestructure), so leaving the M113 companies at "18" Hard Attack and consolidating the remaining launcher sinto a single counter of 8 launchers is the way to go IMHO (8 because more TOW launchers were procured so that each brigade had a total of 7 platoons of 4 launchers each).

-The Hard Attack (8) and Soft attack (10) values of the Motorized infantry units in the brigades are probably a bit on the low side, since the MOTINF companies of the brigades have the same weapons mix as the armoured infantry companies (except for a lower number of .50 HMGs, but their 81mm mortar section had one tube more than the APC companies). I propose raising Hard attack to 9-10 and Soft attack to 11-12.

-An exception to the above allocation of Morale values is the III. Armoured Battalion/JDR. This unit was the armys "showcase" battalion and also serviced the armys Tank and Infantry Training School which was co-located in the same garrison. It thus served as OPFOR battalion for the rest of the Jutland based army battalions, which would go to the Oksbl training area in order to spar with III/JDR. It was thus the only armoured battalion in the Jutland division that was anywhere near its TO&E strenght in enlisted personnel. Its two Tank companies and the armoured infantry company is thus rated at "B" (its roundout unit of motorized infantry was still manned with 9 month conscripts and thus retains its "D").

As for the units manning these brigades and their placement (1985):

-"1. Jyske Brigade"/1st. Jutland Brigade. HQ garrisoned in Fredericia.

-"7. Trnbataljon"

Jyske Kampgruppe/Jutland Battlegroup

-A weak motorized infantry brigade intended to cover the rear areas of LandJut.

-Battlegroup HQ: Only manned by the smallest cadre in peacetime. Heavily reliant on influx of (older) reserve officers and NCOs upon mobilization. Never had the opprtunity to train with all of its constituent battalions at their full strenght. Should thus be classed as "E". The HQ was based in Holstebro.

(For any MOD makers out there here is the crest of the Jutland Battlegroup: http://www.dragonforening.dk/Gif/jkg.gif)

-This unit consisted of 3 Motorized Infantry Battalions: The first two were the "I. & II. Bataljon Slesvigske Fodregiment" (SLFR) (The 1st and 2nd battalion of The Slesvig Regiment of Foot). Garrisoned in Haderslev. Each consisted of 3 companies of 138 men each, but armed with M1 Garand Rifles instead of G3s. Otherwise they are equipped like the motorized infantry in the Brigades. If you want to reflect this, you might consider docking them 1 point in the Soft Attack category (value of 10 or 11) These battalions had a platoon of 4 TOWs in their HQ Company, which should probably be reflected in their Hard attack value (11-12 perhaps?). They are manned by recently trained 9 month conscripts and should thus be rated at "D".

The Battlegroups 3rd battalion was the "IV. Bataljon Jydske Dragonregiment" (4th Battalion Jutland Dragoon regiment). It was equipped like the above but had 4 infantry companies instead of 3. The unit was manned by conscripts with 9 months of training but whose original period of service lay 5-10 years in the past (with periodic refresher training every 3-4 years or so). It should thus be rated at "E".

-The Battlegroup also had a motorized engineer company. The same comments as for the brigade engineer company apply as above with the exception, that this unit is motorized in trucks and consists of conscripts with 9 months of training but whose original period of service lay 5-10 years in the past (with periodic refresher training every 3-4 years or so). It should thus be rated at "E".

-Artillery support was delivered by the "8. Artilleriafdeling Nrrejyske Artilleriregiment" with 24 guns consisting of 4 batteries of 6 M101 ex-US 1950s vintage 105mm howitzers (look in the S. Korean OOB in Korea 85 for stats). Should be "Unreliable". Should not be capable of using WMDs. Unit is staffed with conscripts with 9 months of training but whose original period of service lay 5-10 years in the past (with periodic refresher training every 3-4 years or so). It should thus be rated at "E".

-I am unsure whether or not the Jutland BattleGroup had a single company of old 20 pdr. armed Centurions (some sources says it did, others doesnt mention it. On the other hand, the sources who doesnt mention it, doesnt say anything about the other Battalegroups having old Centurions, when I know for a Fact that they did. So hmm....). I have tentatively chosen to add it to the OOB for now, mostly to see how it plays in the game. Classed as D.

-All Engineer and Logistics units would come from either Jyske Ingenirregiment (Jutland Engineer Regiment) garrisoned in Randers or Jyske Trnregiment (Jutland Logistics Regiment) based in lborg.

-THis OOB does not feature any of the logistics units. It is after al up to the scenario designer how many supply units and of which types (s)he wants in the scenario being made.
